Explore the photos below to get an idea of what daily life at the school is like.

High school girls in class

Like most new buildings in India, the buildings and classrooms are made of concrete. Benches and tables serve as desk. Light comes from the windows.

Students head for class.

The high school runs from 7th to 12th grade. Before GMV opened, girls here had no way to attend 7th grade and up.

Students watching a video

These college students were excited to hear Malala Yousafzai give her Nobel Laureate speech.

Teachers

Most of the teachers at the school are women. They all wear saris.

English instruction in the open

The girls get rigorous instruction in English from their full-time teacher, but they are excited when professional women and men (friends of the school!) come from the U.S. to teach for a few weeks.

High school girls head home

Students walk, bike, or take a school bus to get to school from the villages in the area.

Going home after school

Students wear different colors of uniforms, depending on their grade.

A street in Varanasi

The nearest city to the school, Varanasi, is one of India's holiest cities. It is on the banks of the Ganges River, and is very crowded and busy.

The road outside the school

After parents saw the benefits of the school, they begged for their boys to be able to come. Finally, they got an elementary school building where boys were allowed.
